Blankets, sleeping bags, winter coats, boots and other items you might have stuffed away in your closet could help a homeless person make it through the cold days and nights ahead this winter.

For the second year, Blankets for Metro Moncton Homeless www.BlanketsForMoncton.com is issuing an appeal to local residents to donate clean blankets, pillows and other items that can help the homeless.

According to Statistics Canada, about 18,000 people, or 14 per cent of local population, live below the poverty line. Some people live in impromptu shelters or spend their nights in local homeless shelters. Nazareth House, an emergency shelter in Moncton, served more than 765 clients in 2006, who stayed a total of 4,082 nights.

Blankets for Metro Moncton www.BlanketsForMoncton.com is looking for such items as boots, socks, hats, scarves, backpacks, duffel bags, suitcases, toiletries, children’s clothes, diapers, feminine products, bus tickets, canned milk, grocery store gift cards, coffee coupons, laundry tokens and anything else that can help the homeless.

The collected items will be distributed to local outreach programs like YMCA Reconnect, Nazareth House, Crossroads for Women, Youth Quest, Moncton Youth Residences, MAGMA, Boutique Encore, SIDA/AIDS Moncton, Harvest House, St-Vincent de Paul, Mobile One, Karing Kitchen and Ray of Hope for our local homeless and at risk citizens as well as other local area programs that serve the homeless, people at risk of being homeless, and people living in poverty in our region.

Anyone wishing to donate large items, such as furniture, may call Nadine at 961-0963 for more information.

Olympic Spirit in Moncton
 
MONCTON – Residents of Moncton anxious to catch the Olympic Spirit will have the opportunity to see the Olympic Flame in person on November 23, 2009 as it passes through on its way towards the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, presented by Coca-Cola and RBC, will reach over 90 per cent of Canadians within a one-hour drive.  The torch relay route is available at vancouver2010.com and information on how residents can apply to be torchbearers can be found at icoke.ca and rbc.com/carrythetorch.
 
“We are thrilled to be hosting the Olympic torch in Moncton,” commented Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc. “All eyes will be on Canada in 2010 when our country has the privilege of hosting world-class athletes from around the world.  Moncton is honoured to play a part in this legacy, and will proudly host the torch in 2009.”
 
Residents interested in applying for an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to carry the Olympic Flame can apply at iCoke.ca or rbc.com/carrythetorch. Coca-Cola and RBC, the relay’s presenting partners, have the exclusive rights for the public to enter the Olympic Torchbearer program and are looking for Canadian applicants who commit to live healthier or are inspired to create a stronger country by volunteering or making sustainable choices. There will be several opportunities to apply for torchbearer spots beginning on November 21, 2008.
 
The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will begin its 106-day Canadian journey on October 30, 2009. The Flame’s pan-Canadian journey will culminate on February 12, 2010 when it arrives in Vancouver for the Opening Ceremony before a global viewing audience of billions.
 
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay route will be the longest domestic Torch Relay in Olympic history, stretching over 45,000 kilometres throughout Canada. Upon its conclusion, the Olympic Flame will have been welcomed in over 1,000 communities and passed within a one-hour of more than 90 per cent of the entire Canadian population.
 
The Government of Canada is a proud supporter of the Olympic Torch Relay helping to bring the Olympic Flame to as many Canadians as possible.

VANOC is responsible for the planning, organizing, financing and staging of the XXI Olympic Winter Games and the X Paralympic Winter Games in 2010. Coca-Cola et RBC, les partenaires de présentation du relais, sont les détenteurs des droits exclusifs de participation publique au programme des porteurs du flambeau olympique et ils recherchent des Canadiens et Canadiennes qui s’engagent à vivre plus sainement ou qui sont inspirés à créer un pays plus fort en faisant du bénévolat ou en faisant des choix durables. Dès le 21 novembre 2008, il y aura plusieurs occasions de présenter sa demande pour être porteur du flambeau olympique.
 
Le 30 octobre 2009, le relais de la flamme olympique de 2010 commencera son parcours canadien de 106 jours. Le parcours pancanadien de la flamme se terminera le 12 février 2010 alors qu’elle arrivera à Vancouver pour la cérémonie d’ouverture qui aura lieu devant des milliards de spectateurs du monde entier.
 
Le parcours du relais de la flamme olympique de Vancouver 2010 sera le plus long dans un même pays de toute l’histoire olympique. Il traversera le Canada entier. La flamme parcourra donc 45 000 kilomètres. Son parcours terminé, la flamme olympique aura passé par plus de mille collectivités et à moins d’une heure de plus de 90 p. 100 de toute la population canadienne.
 
Le gouvernement du Canada est fier d’appuyer le relais de la flamme olympique et de faire passer la flamme près du plus grand nombre Canadiens et Canadiennes possible.

Le COVAN est responsable de la planification, de l’organisation, du financement et de la tenue des XXIes Jeux olympiques d’hiver et des Xes Jeux paralympiques d’hiver de 2010. 2^nd Annual Blankets for Metro Moncton Homeless

Nadine Lipton is continuing the project in 2008 that was launched by Monique Gough in the fall of 2007. Nadine is collecting clean blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, winter coats, winter boots, socks, tuques, hats, scarves, gloves, steel toed boots and shoes (mens and ladies), work gloves, backpacks, duffle bags, suitcases, toiletries, (especially hotel sized soap and shampoo bottles, deodorant, razors), children’s clothes, diapers, feminine products, bus tickets, food vouchers (sobeys gift cards), coffee coupons, laundry tokens etc. Anything useful is greatly appreciated. If you cannot drop off your items or if you are donating large items like furniture, please call 961-0963 to arrange for your items to be picked up.

The collected items will be distributed to clients of the YMCA Reconnect program, Youth Quest, and the House of Nazareth which are services for our local homeless and at risk citizens as well as other local area programs that aid the homeless and people living in poverty in our region.

It’s getting cold out and people need your help. Most of us can turn up the heat but some people don’t even have a place to heat. Let’s keep them warm as best we can.
